AC Not Cooling? A Reno Checklist
These checks take a few minutes and often solve simple problems. If not, they give the technician a useful head start.

Cool mode, setpoint below the room, fan on Auto, fresh batteries. Wait five minutes after changes.
Breakers and disconnect
Check the panel and the outdoor disconnect. Reset once only.
Filter
A dusty filter can freeze the coil. Replace it.
Outdoor coil
Look for weeds, cottonwood fluff or dust packed into the fins. Rinse gently with the power off.
Ice
Turn cooling off and run the fan if the lines are icy.
Drain
A full pan can trip the float switch and shut the AC off.
Outdoor fan
The fan should spin when cooling is on. Humming without spinning needs a technician.
Late afternoon lag
If it catches up after sunset, the system may simply be at its limit. If it never does, book a repair.
Write it down
Note what you checked and what the system did. It shortens the visit.
Next
See AC repair.
Stay safe
Don't open electrical panels or handle refrigerant lines. Leave those to the technician.
Smoke and dust days
If the filter loads up quickly during a smoky or windy week, change it again before deciding the AC has failed.
Hot spots
If only some rooms are warm, the problem may be ducts or airflow rather than the AC itself. Note which rooms and when.
