What that means for your AC

Homes here are spread out, often on acreage, with propane or electric heat as well as natural gas. Heat pumps are worth considering where gas isn't available; see heat pumps. Rural homes on wells and septic often have equipment in outbuildings and garages too, and propane furnaces need their own fuel and venting checks each fall.

Wind off the lake

The valley can be very windy, which drives dust into outdoor units and filters. Check and change filters often. Long driveways and gravel roads mean dust on every surface, so outdoor coils and indoor filters load up faster than in town; plan on changing filters monthly in the windy seasons.

A fire-prone valley

The Washoe Valley is described as very fire-prone because of its vegetation, slopes and limited water for protecting structures. On smoky days from nearby fires, keeping the house closed up with a good filter in the system helps; evaporative coolers, which pull in outside air, are best switched off. Ask a technician which filter your system can handle and keep spares ready before summer; see smoke days and your HVAC.
